AI Tools Worth Setting Up Today (with Student Benefit)

The six AI tools I actually use, plus a curated secondary list. Verified against official sources as of May 2026.

AI Tools Worth Setting Up Today (with Student Benefit)

The school year is wrapping up and summer is the best time of the year to build, learn, and try new tools. It’s also the moment to lock in every student-only AI offer you can, especially if you’re graduating.

If you’re a graduating student: MOVE FAST. Most of these offers verify against your .edu email or active student status. The day you lose either, you lose the offer.

There’s a bigger pattern at work too. AI tools open up free or deeply discounted student plans early to drive adoption, and then quietly close the door once they have enough traction. Google’s Gemini student offer is the most recent example: the free year of Google AI Pro for students ended March 11, 2026 (source — the page now reads “Our previous student offer ended on March 11, 2026 and is no longer available in your region”).

So: go claim these TODAY, if they’re still live while you’re reading this.

The six I actually use every day

Tried, used extensively, kept. These are the offers I’d tell a classmate to set up first.

1. Notion Plus — Free

The single best note / knowledge tool for grad school. Free Plus plan for a 1-member workspace if you have an eligible school email. I built Notion as an operating system for my Product Management coursework and multiple side projects.

Notion AI is a separate add-on and is not included free.

2. Cursor Pro — Free for 1 year

AI-native IDE (integrated development environment), which can be used as VS Code alternative. Worth installing even if you’re not an engineer. Cursor Pro gives you access to premium LLM models (Claude, GPT, etc.) to work across your codebase and file system, with additional features for context management and code reviews.

3. BizCrush — 5 month free

Real-time AI meeting agent built for in-person conversations, excellent for networking events, recruiting coffee chats, conference floors, founder-customer calls. It’s especially strong at live multi-language transcription and translation.

5. Granola Business — Free for 12 months

6. GitHub Student Developer Pack — Free

The gold standard student bundle. Copilot, DigitalOcean credits, Namecheap domain, JetBrains, and roughly 30 other dev tools — all included once you verify.

FieldValue
CostFree
VerificationGitHub Education benefits application
PrereqAdd and verify your school-issued email (e.g., columbia.edu) in your GitHub account settings before applying
LengthRe-evaluated as your student status persists

Apply: education.github.com/pack

One-time blocker most students hit: the application checks for a verified school email on your GitHub account. If your account is set up with a personal email, add the school email under Settings → Emails → “Add email address,” verify it, then return to the application.

Worth knowing about

Strong offers, just not in my daily stack.

Perplexity Pro — $10/month (50% off)

The best AI search tool for academic work. Citations, Learn Mode, full Pro model access. If you do research-heavy coursework, this is probably the biggest single win on the list.

Adobe Creative Cloud — ~70% off first year

All Apps plan + Firefly generative AI in Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere. Discount is steep in year one, less so after — set a renewal reminder.

Otter.ai Pro — 20% off

Transcription for lectures, interviews, group meetings. Individual Pro only — not workspace / team plans.

What’s not on this list (and why)

Quick reference for the tools people most often ask about.

  • Claude Pro — Claude Builder Club in selected schools hosts on-campus events early in the semester, where the participants receive access to Claude Pro.
  • Google Gemini Pro — The 1-year free Google AI Pro for students ended March 11, 2026. The page still resolves but the offer doesn’t. Monitor gemini.google/students if you want to know when (or if) it relaunches.
  • ChatGPT Plus — No standing global student discount on consumer pricing. OpenAI’s student credits offer is for Codex specifically, not Plus.
  • Microsoft Copilot (Office 365 Education) — Depends on whether your school’s tenant has Copilot Chat enabled. Worth checking the school IT portal.
  • Canva Pro — Higher-ed access is institution-led Canva Campus, not a universal individual claim.
  • Midjourney — No student-specific discount.

How to verify anything here

  1. Click the official link. I’ve linked help-center / pricing pages, not third-party deal sites. Please DO NOT ask me any troubleshooting questions.
  2. Check the refresh date at the top. If it’s stale (>3 months), re-verify before sharing publicly. Offers change quietly. If you notice any change, please DO share with me and I will update this post accordingly.
  3. Try SheerID, Student Beans, or UNiDAYS directly if you’re hunting beyond this list. Many discounts route through these.

Maintenance

This list gets refreshed quarterly (or when a tool’s terms visibly change). The deeper research file — with ruled-out tools, validation logs, and pending audits — lives at github.com/tyoon10/student-ai-tools. If you spot something out of date, ping me!
